From Russia to Germany

я заканчиваю обучение в магистратуре по программе "Финансы" (Master of Science in Finance) в “European Business School в Германии и наслаждаюсь каждым днем пребывания в этой бизнес-школе. До этого я закончил бакалавриат в государственном университете в Баварии и поэтому сумел ощутить сильнейший контраст между государственным и частным немецким образованием.

Сама программа магистратуры по финансам здесь выстроена максимально интенсивно: вместо стандартных 4 семестров ты занимаешься непосредственно учебой здесь только 2, но зато работаешь каждый день, в основном в группах и с презентациями. Я очень был рад возможности выбирать интересные и нужные для меня курсы, тем самым специализироваться в риск менеджменте.

Классы все маленькие - от 10 до 30 человек максимум. Зачастую профессор знает в лицо всех через две недели. Особенно важным представляется мне, что самих профессоров как раз-таки мало. Многочисленные курсы проводятся и оцениваются непосредственно действующими менеджерами из индустрии (от инвестментбанков, инвестиционных компаний до консалтинговых бутиков). Это становится возможным благодаря тому, что бизнес-школа находится в 50 км от Франкфурта, крупнейшего финансового центра континентальной Европы. На таких курсах можно сразу же попробовать договориться насчет стажировки и обсудить возможности трудоустройства.

Сам EBS является на мой взгляд лучшим университетом в Германии, что касается трудоустройства в этой стране. Его выпускники стартуют зачастую на очень престижных и высокооплачиваемых позициях как в Германии, так и в Лондоне. Это объясняется огромным количеством выпускников, работающих в разных секторах экономики, которые все состоят в Alumni Network (общество  выпускников) и с которыми можно связаться на счет работы. Нередко один из таких выпускником обязательно появляется у вас потом на собеседовании, как было в моем случае.

Учеба в EBS в корне построена на групповой работе в группах от 2 до 5 человек. Здесь интенсивно занимаешься с 1 сентября до 3 мая, конца второго семестра проектной работой и последующими презентациями, которые менеджеры оценивают и засекают вас параллельно на секундомере. Мотивирует студента в основном чувство конкуренции между группами, да и ответственность перед своей группой прежде всего. Поэтому мне прежде всего в этом университете понравилась проектная работа с первого до последнего дня и минимальное количество экзаменов. В государственных университетах было ровно на оборот, и это отражалось сильно на оценке.

Вне учебы, мне больше всего понравилось, что на магистратуре было всего 137 человек. Все почти знали к концу друг друга и много раз пересекались на организованных вечеринках самими же студентами. Это не подвальные мероприятия как в каких-то шарадах, а наоборот, достойные люксовые пути. У студентов есть всегда возможность в свободное время добраться за 15 минут на электрички до столицы земли Гессен, Визбадена, где полно магазинов, баров и клубов. Для желающих что-то покрупнее нужно проехать час на электричке до Франкфурта.

Я не пожалел ни момента, что поступил сюда, несмотря на то, что поступление было очень долгим и сложным с подготовкой к GMAT, TOEFL, cобеседования. Но когда ты уже внутри, ты понимаешь, что это позади и вливаешься в общую компанию очень интеллигентных, интересных, студентов со всего мира.

From South America to Germany

Hey guys,

Here is another testimony of an international student from Uruguay who has just finished her Master degree at EBS Business School. 

I hope you will appreciate what she tells us all ;)

"Hay veces que llegamos a un punto en el que, si bien sentimos tenerlo todo, sentimos también que queremos hacer algo más de nosotros. Yo hace año y medio terminé mi título de grado en Uruguay, y decidí venir a Alemania a hacer una Maestría en Gerencia. El sólo hecho de cambiar de cultura ha sido un gran desafío, y una de mis experiencias más enriquecedoras, tanto en lo profesional como en lo personal.

Es tanto lo que uno gana con este tipo de aventura, que lo quiero compartir contigo. Porque yo también he estado ahí, del otro lado del charco, pensando si valía la pena. No hay nada como estar en casa; pero después de todo, si uno decide irse, también siempre tiene la oportunidad de volver. Y qué más lindo que volver con una mochila cargada de mundo! 

Por qué Alemania? Porque la sociedad alemana se caracteriza por su Eficiencia, Exactitud, Formalidad, Profesionalismo, Competencia, Perseverancia, Perfeccionismo... y son valores que quería adoptar para mi carrera profesional. Por otro lado, elegí Alemania porque quería desmitificar clichés como ser la frialdad, la arrogancia y la falta de espontaneidad de su gente. 

Sin saberlo de antemano, terminé haciendo mi maestría en una de las mejores universidades alemanas para estudios en negocios: EBS Business School. Una universidad de carácter internacional, y por ende ofreciendo los programas en inglés. Ha oficiado como mi ventana al mundo, no sólo por el semestre de intercambio en otro país y las prácticas en empresas internacionales (también en otros países), sino por poder sentarme en la mesa del comedor a hablar con mis amigos de Alemania, de Italia, de Irán, de China, de Rusia, de España, de India, de Moldavia, de Croacia, de Finlandia, Suecia, Irlanda, Eslovaquia, Estados Unidos, Australia, Francia, Malta, Bélgica, Canadá, Nueva Zelanda, Singapur, Pakistán, Marruecos, Sudáfrica, entre tantos otros. Y claro, también un par viniendo de países de América Latina, la mayoría viniendo de México, pero muy poquitos. Supongo que se debe a que los programas de intercambio no están tan fomentados en las universidades latinoamericanas. Y es una pena, por todo lo que un intercambio o el realizar una carrera completa en el extranjero implican. Entonces, para nosotros latinoamericanos, el venirnos a estudiar a otro país u otro continente depende casi enteramente de nuestra iniciativa, y de la suerte de encontrar información útil y confiable en internet. 

Si estás estudiando en Sudamérica, y querés hacer un semestre de intercambio, podés fijarte si tu universidad tiene a EBS Business School como una de sus Partner Universities.

Student-led organizations and initiatives at EBS Business School

Hey guys,

In a previous post I mentioned a few student-led organizations such as EBS Symposium, EBSpreneurship, EBS Supply Chain Management Forum, etc. that are exclusive events organized entirely by the EBS students.

However, apart from these, the university offers the students the possibility to engage in many other initiatives that aim at developing their personalities and at offering them opportunities that match their interests and hobbies.

Thus, EBS Business School has over 20 resorts in which students participate in their free time.

As you can see on the picture below, there are resorts for sports, music, wine tasting, communication, art, accounting, marketing, etc.

So, if you are a singer or play an instrument, you can always join the EBS Band resort and play at various events organized by EBS.

OR if you would like to learn about the different kinds of wine and taste them then you should definitely join the In Vino Veritas resort.

Thus, no matter your passions or hobbies, there is always something for you to do while studying at EBS Business School. ;)

From India to Germany - International experience at EBS Business School

There are many success stories of international students coming to EBS Business School in Germany and proving to everyone why they deserve a special and honorable spot in the university's history.

Here is an amazing article of a friend of mine who tells the beautiful story of an Indian exchange student at EBS. There is nothing else to add, so I'll just let you discover it yourselves.

"As the slogan 'Inspiring Personalities' suggests, EBS is a platform where the world best talent from different nationalities come and learn, inspire and get inspired.Here is the story of  Sowmyalakshmi Sethuraman from Indian Institute ofTechnology ( Department of Management Studies) who has stayed at EBS for a semester as an exchange student.

Globalization is the buzz word today, and no institution of higher education can claim to be truly global without reaching out to the locals in different parts of the world. Having completed my tenure here in EBS as an exchange student from DoMS (Department of Management Studies), Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Madras, I couldn’t agree more on the importance of globalization in the field of education.

Braving the cold weather and persistent snow in what was called the coldest winter in Germany in years, EBS was as welcoming as I’d heard about it. It was probably the first time ever for most of us from India to be meeting such an eclectic mix of students, almost from every possible region in the world. Nigeria to Bulgaria, India to Japan. I met people from different nations which I have ever heard of. One of the greatest advantages of such an Exchange Programme is the platform that provided us a learning  about and embrace each other’s’ cultures, diversities, traditions and much more. EBS provided more than one way for such networking.

The MBA Classrooms

Do we get extra marks for class participation? Well, it doesn’t really matter to the students, given the highly charged intellectual environment both the faculty and students foster in every classroom session. As future leaders and managers, we all strive for quality decision making, and what better way to arrive at it than by learning from multiple perspectives of students from all over the globe. A holistic approach to case studies, extensive discussions and debates, listening to each other’s experiences, all in all contributes to learning with an open mind.
The professors come with rich industry experience and excellent academic background, and also extend the learning outside classrooms by arranging meaningful industrial visits.

The ‘E’ quotient

Ethics and Entrepreneurship – these two arguably are the most hotly discussed topics in most of the leading B schools, both having their respective growing relevance in today’s world.
One very unique course which aptly echoes this E-quotient as well as the motto of EBS, ‘inspiring personalities’, was the VIP (Very Inspiring People) course, a series of talks by inspiring people from the field of Social Business / Social Entrepreneurship.  Here, a range of Entrepreneurs shared their stories which aimed at triggering a sense of community in the students, and also highlighting the need for more and more Entrepreneurs today. Innovation and Entrepreneurship was also one such course helping us nurture entrepreneurial skills through workshops and interactive panel discussions.
Through these and many other courses and endeavors, EBS comes across to me as an institution which earnestly makes an effort to imbibe a sense of responsible leadership to its students, by integrating the importance of Ethics in its courses, and not having an isolated approach.

And everything else

 While we enjoyed the quiet and charming countryside on the banks of Rhine and its sprawling vineyards, we planned hard to find the best ways to travel Europe. Writing about our Euro-trotting will probably take pages, be it about visiting places with momentous history, spectacular landscapes or potpourri of diverse culture and art.
Cooking became our newfound hobby, trying everything from the famous German Schnitzels to the Indian tadka in our little kitchen. We had frequent shopping sprees in Frankfurt on bright sunny days and lazy little parties at home over some beer and native wine on coldest of days.
I would sum up by saying that your experiences and learning will multiply, if you choose to come as an exchange student to EBS.  It takes you away from home, only to find a new home for you everywhere you go."

Bachelor and Master Summer Session at EBS

Got nothing to do this summer but wish for something challenging and entertaining?

The Rheingau region

EBS Business School could not have been located in a better place than the Rheingau region in Germany. Absolutely astonishing this spring!
